*** Date for the diary*** Our next meeting will be at 11am on Saturday 20th May, 2017. We will meet again in the Conservatory at The Ramside Hotel as this location suits most needs. Hope to see you there. There's lots to discuss and it will be our celebration of World Lupus day (Which is 10th May but I am at work!).
Our latest get together was on Saturday 11th February 2017 at The Ramside Hall Hotel,Durham. Member Judith Sutherland has kindly written an update...
Although we held our latest meeting on a miserable cold and wet Saturday in February, the meeting was anything but.
There was a good turnout of existing members and we welcomed some ‘newbies’ too. We rearranged the comfy seating in the conservatory area of the Ramside Hotel so we could all see and hear what was going on.
The talking was based around getting to know the newcomers, one of whom was only diagnosed at the end of last year; another was diagnosed 23 years previously. As usual we all tried to offer up bits of knowledge through life experiences and years of coping with the disease, encouraging them to stick to the Lupus UK website so as not to frighten the life out of them. Overall I think they went home knowing that they are not alone on their journey, no topic is off limits and how fascinating it is that we all have the same disease, yet are all so different in our symptoms.
Linda showed us photographs of an extreme reaction to a mosquito bite she got whilst on holiday, asking if anyone else had had similar problems. Another member Maureen had had a bad reaction and there were discussions about reactions to common problems such as bites and sunlight and generic medications. Our 2 hours went very quickly and we all look forward to our next meeting. Hopefully we will have even more members next time – the date will be advised in May nearer the time.
On November 25th, 2016, member Linda Robinson collected a cheque on behalf of Lupus UK for £200 which had kindly been raised by members of Stockton on Tees Masonic Hall. The gentleman presenting the cheque to Linda is Ian Crowle, the master of the Stockton on Tees Masonic Lodge 9667. Thank you so much for your fundraising efforts and choosing Lupus UK as a charity to support!
**Clare Langley and Laura Young successfully completed the New York Marathon on 6th November and raised a fantastic amount of £12,000 for Lupus UK and Cancer research. Well done to both of you!!**
On Saturday 22nd October 2016, a Coffee morning for Lupus UK awareness month was held in St Margaret's Church hall, Brookfield,Middlesborough. There was a great turnout and the fantastic amount of £500 was raised. Lupus UK member Linda Robinson organised the event which was a tremendous success. Several stalls selling books, CD's, cakes and Linda's homemade bags proved popular. Alongside a tombola and a raffle prize selection was a very important table displaying Lupus information.
Thank you Linda for all your hard work. Special mentions and thanks to Maureen and John for their tea and coffee making skills and to Judith for her fine vocals with the raffle draw.
On Monday 10th October 2016, I had the pleasure of attending Westerhope Golf Club to receive a cheque on behalf of Lupus UK from the Rotary Club of Newcastle Upon Tyne West.
Bob Rennison, a rotary member invited me along to say a few words. Bob knows about Lupus as his daughter, Kay has been diagnosed with it for 30 years.
I explained just how much it means to be a chosen charity of theirs, not only for the fundraising but how much it raises awareness of the disease within the community.
Thank you so much for your hard work and please stay in touch.
